Customer discovery survey
Before you build, find out how people handle the problem today. A discovery survey asks what they actually do rather than whether they like your idea, and it gets answers when it goes to people you can already reach: a group you belong to, a newsletter you write, customers you already talk to.
Say this to your assistant
“Make a customer discovery survey for people who run small bakeries, about how they take custom cake orders today: how orders come in, how often one goes wrong, what they have tried, how big a problem it is, what they would change, and whether they would talk to me for 20 minutes.”
Change the wording to suit your event or business. formset reads what the question is asking and picks the right type, so an email address is checked as an email and a rating is collected as a rating.
What formset builds
This is the page your respondents open. Try the questions; nothing is sent.
It is hosted at its own link straight away. Respondents need no account, and you can share it as a link, a QR code, or embedded in your own site.
Getting more answers
- Send it where the people you are building for already are. A survey sent to strangers rarely gets answered.
- Ask what people do today, not whether they would use your idea. "What have you tried?" gets a more honest answer than "Would you pay for this?"
- Once ten or so answers are in, ask what the people who rated it the biggest problem have in common.
Then just ask
When the answers come in, ask in the same conversation:
- “How often do orders go wrong, and how big a problem is it on average?”
- “What have people already tried?”
- “Who agreed to a call, and how do I reach them?”
